Want to Stop Biting Your Nails? This one is for you:
I was a nail biter for over two decades of my life. It becomes annoying after a while that you can’t stop, but I want you to know it is possible! There are numerous ways to break the habit and have those long thick healthy nails that you dream of. I promise you’ve got this! It’s time to stop biting your nails!
Let’s start with a little background on the damages caused by biting one’s nails. Some might think, ‘well they grow back, so it can’t be that bad!’
Wrong. Repeated nail-biting causes damage to more than just the nail. Sure, your nails grow back, but the areas around your nails, not so much. Any nail technician can tell just looking at my hands that I’m a former nail biter because of the skin and cuticles surrounding the area. It’s gross to think about, but most people with this habit bite more than just the nail, but also the skin surrounding it (think hangnail area). By doing this, it can actually remove the cuticle and cause permanent damage.
What Is Cuticle?
The cuticle is a delicate layer of skin below the edge of your nails. Its main function is to protect from bacteria which can lead to infections. Therefore, biting your cuticles leaves your nails vulnerable to bacteria found in your saliva.
We all know what the solution is, just stop biting your nails. Simple right? For those battling the habit, not so much. There are however steps you can take to quit the habit.
The process can take as long or as little time as you would like. It’s a psychological process, ‘where there is a will, there is a way!’
The 3 Step Method To Stop Biting Nails
1. Cultivate Mindfulness
The other steps won’t work without first building awareness to what you’re doing and the best way to do so is by being mindful to your actions and feelings. When it comes to nail-biting, mindfulness is key in preventing it.
2. Manicure Therapy
Spending money at the salon to keep your nails looking cute and pretty may make you think twice before you bite them. If you’re not sure that there’s a nice manicure for your bitten nails, keep in mind that there are many manicure ideas that flatter short nails. You can dare to try glitter nail polish, holographic nail polish, and everything you like, or try a nail builder gel to protect your nails. If you become obsessed with the colors, glitters and all the fun involved, you’re more likely to stay aware of your habit. No one likes the taste of nail polish anyway!
3. Be Patient
No matter how many times you fall back into your bad habit – it’s so very important to not give up. You won’t overcome this behavior overnight so Take it as a long-term commitment and be forgiving if you relapse.
In time you will learn to identify your triggers and remind yourself in those moments to stop what you are doing, right away and be mindful in order to really break the habit, ones, and for all.
